Into the micro-world

Introducing Microtexts

To write short, short texts is a valuable goal.

Short, short skirts have come and gone, but short trimmed text is right for now, for the small spaces on websites, writing for columns and other confined spaces.

Various terms like flash fiction, micro-lit, sudden fiction all need to be investigated for their particular needs and opportunities.

The writing of short texts requires discipline but rewards come fast and many. Deleting the 'the' word has helped many a writer or poet achieve a shorter word count. But this should not come at the expense of meaning nor of reducing the flow of language to the extent that a sentence sounds choppy, sounds wrong to our ears.

In writing a short text you will need to work out how to reduce word count through losing unnecessary and/or redundant description. Condense and find out how this approach gives the reader more space to imagine. Discover the different ways in which writing is adapting to less real estate on page or screen.
